Here’s Why 2016 Is Going To Last A Second Longer Than Most Other Years

A lot of people, myself included, can’t wait for 2016 to be over so we can start hating 2017 but there’s some bad news, 2016 is going to be longer than most years. 

2016 will be a whole one second longer than most years because we’re about to experience a leap second this New Year’s Eve, which is like a much shorter version of a leap year.

The reason for this added extra season of torment is because the Earth’s orbit isn’t perfectly circular it’s more egg shaped, and as it circles The Sun this wibbly-wobbly orbit can cause the Earth’s rotation to slow down or even speed up.

Other factors include the movement of the Earth’s crust and mantle. Interestingly on the day of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and consequently Boxing Day tsunami the Earth lost 2.68 microseconds because of the quake.

The thing is, because we base the time on the Earth’s rotation (one full rotation every 24 hours) researchers sometimes deem it necessary to add a leap second to keep clocks on Earth as accurate as possible.

Time is a tool to measure the day

Since scientists first noticed this variance in the Earth’s orbit back in 1972 there have been 26 leap seconds inserted around the world, or roughly speaking every 18 months.

Of course 2016 had to be a second longer than necessary. Can we not just make 2017 start minus one second earlier?

A giant South Korean-built manned robot that walks like a human has taken its first steps towards world domination.

South Korean robotics firm Hankook Mirae Technology have created a 1.5 ton machine, which has drawn comparisons with the Amplified Mobility Platform suit in blockbuster Avatar, Fox News reports.

It probably shouldn’t surprise us as their designer, Vitaly Bulgarov, has several movie credits to his name which include Transformers, Robocop and Terminator.

“Our robot is the world’s first manned bipedal robot and is built to work in extreme hazardous areas where humans cannot go,” Hankook Mirae Technology chairman Yang Jin-Ho said.

The 13-foot tall robot is only 12 months into its development and is rumoured it will be used as a warning to North Korea and Kim Jong-un.

It could find itself being used in construction sites, warehouses or even for military purposes – with the potential of it making an appearance at the border between North Korea and South Korea.

But according to its creators, the robot is far from finished as more work is needed on its balance and power systems.

“The robot is one year old so it is taking baby steps. Just like humans, it will be able to move more freely in the next couple of years,” Yang added.

Hanbook plans to have the final version of Method-2 ready for potential buyers by the end of 2017 and is expected to sell for around 10 billion won (£6.8 million).

Only time will tell if it’s actually used for the greater good.

Earth's volcanoes occur because its crust is broken into 17 major, rigid tectonic plates that float on a hotter, softer layer in its mantle.

Therefore, on Earth, volcanoes are generally found where tectonic plates are diverging or converging. For example, a mid-oceanic ridge, such as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, has volcanoes caused by divergent tectonic plates pulling apart; the Pacific Ring of Fire has volcanoes caused by convergent tectonic plates coming together. Volcanoes can also form where there is stretching and thinning of the crust's  ., in the East African Rift and the Wells Gray-Clearwater volcanic field and Rio Grande Rift in North America. This type of volcanism falls under the umbrella of "plate hypothesis" volcanism.^[

 Volcanism away from plate boundaries has also been explained as mantle plumes. These so-called "hotspots", for example Hawaii, are postulated to arise from upwelling diapirs with magma from the core–mantle boundary, 3,000 km deep in the Earth. Volcanoes are usually not created where two tectonic plates slide past one another.

Erupting volcanoes can pose many hazards, not only in the immediate vicinity of the eruption. One such hazard is that volcanic ash can be a threat to aircraft, in particular those with jet engines where ash particles can be melted by the high operating temperature; the melted particles then adhere to the turbine blades and alter their shape, disrupting the operation of the turbine. Large eruptions can affect temperature as ash and droplets of sulfuric acid obscure the sun and cool the Earth's lower atmosphere (or troposphere); however, they also absorb heat radiated up from the Earth, thereby warming the upper atmosphere (or stratosphere). Historically, so-called volcanic winters have caused catastrophic famines.

Films We Can’t Wait to See in 2017

If we’re going to be honest 2016 hasn’t been a great year for cinema. Sure there have been some brilliant films released (Have you seen Rogue One: A Star Wars Story!) but the majority have left audiences feeling disappointed.

Warer Bros and DC Comics fell flat on their faces as it launched its attempt at a cinematic empire, X-Men: Apocalypse was just a terrible mess and even Zoolander 2had zero personality.

However, 2017 is now on our doorsteps and looks set to be a fantastic year for film. There are returns from some much loved characters, plenty of sequels to get excited about and much, much more to look forward to.
